Mallard 75 Replication Run
On 27th & 28th July 2013, the Yorkshire Group was exhibiting at the National Railway Museum, York. As part of the Mallard 75 celebrations we aimed to replicate the World Speed Record run in 1/32nd scale using a specially adapted section of G1MRA's showcase layout, Dobson Bridge. These attempts took place approximately every 30 minutes in the Grand Hall.
We used a range of A4 locomotives, with a specially adapted dynamometer car and a replica train of 3 pairs of articulated coaches, provided by Golden Age Models. The dynamomter car will contained a telemetric unit which transmitted the approximate speed of the train as it travelled round Dobson Bridge. The train then attempted to reach the exact speed that Mallard achieved by leaving Dobson Bridge and travelling along a 30m straight on which there was a speed trap which immediately transmitted the recorded data to an electronic display so that the viewing public was able to see how close the driver got! The best attempt reached a scale speed of 125.4mph, and several more came within a couple of mph of matching Mallard.
We were greatly endebted to the following sponsors who have generously loaned equipment, or supported the venture financially, and without whom the event would not have taken place:
ASTER HOBBIES UK, CLIFF BARKER, GOLDEN AGE MODELS, DEXION, FINESCALEBRASS(UK)Ltd, LOU REX, MODEL ENGINEERS LASER,
THE NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM, PEAK RAIL, PETER SPOERER MODEL ENGINEER, and SLATERS PLASTIKARD
